A piece of good news
by Claudia Sonea

According to the latest statement made by the Flanders Institute for Biotechnology there has been created a test to detect early liver cancer, one that could give a more accurately diagnose of the major killer in Asia and Africa. The test detects HCC (hepatocellular carcinoma) that often appears after chronic inflammation of the liver caused by hepatitis B or C virus infection or cirrhosis of the liver. Only in China every year half a million patients die because of this. The creation process was made in partnership with research centers in Beijing and Shanghai in China and developed on Chinese patients suffering of cirrhosis of the liver due to hepatitis B. There are two particular sugar groups in blood proteins and their levels indicate the stage of the disease. The test gave accurate results in 70 percents of the cases and when it is combined with the current procedures of detecting the disease, the accuracy increases dramatically. Scientists are working now to make the new test viable with the clinical practices in order to be accepted on the market. However, the date when the test will be available is not yet known. It is a good step towards the discovery of a cure, because the main goal is to save people of the terrible disease, not only to detect it- that sometimes might not be sufficient enough. The HCC is becoming prevalent in the West too and definitely there will be researches into the creation of a treatment. Stay connected to find more!

Every kid has to be vaccinated
by Barbora Misakova

The question of health is the basic one. I would be there is no one who like lying in the bed with fever and have terrible throat ache. There is no doubt that parents are doing their best just to have all their children healthy with no medial problems. I see it on my mother, that anytime I come to her and tell her I am not feeling good, she is doing what she can just to make me feeling better. Of course, sometimes only mother's care and effort is not enough and some kind of medicament is needed. One of the most effective type of medicament is vaccine what is booster of immunity to a certain disease. Children are for example vaccinated against flu and older humans could be vaccinated against smallpox and other serious diseases. Now the question about vaccine comes from the U.S. where a federal advisory panel advises to vaccinate all children, except infants younger than 6 months. This means that about 30 million more children should get their vaccine too what would represent one of the largest expansions in flu vaccination in the history of U.S.Statistics show that although children ages 5 to 18 get flu more often than other age groups, especially children ages 6 months to 5 years and adults 50 and older have weaker immune system and for them could a flu presents serious threat which could cause other serious illness or even death. Experts also believe that vaccinating these age group could cut down days of lost work, when parents have to stay at home with their ill children. Vaccinating children against the flu could also prevent spreading this illness from children to adults and the elderly. If you are one of those who hate injections there is other alternative & a nasal spray vaccine called FluMist which is approved for people ages 2 to 49.According to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices vaccination of children should start as soon as possible, and doctors should already order their vaccine for other vaccine season. Although vaccine market expects to be able to produce enough vaccines there is still possibility it won't be so. Problems could be also with small number of the doctors who will vaccine so many children.

Chris Cantell Discusses Health: Sleeplessness can kill
by Claudia Sonea

It seems that we take for granted many things in life, sleeping being one of them. For most of us sleep varies as our schedule varies and therefore the 7-8 hours of sleep recommended by the doctor are not being fulfilled. However the implications are rather concerning as it may lead not only to incidents, but people are twice as likely to die, according to a British-US study made on 24 September 2007. If an occasional night without sleep makes you feel tired the next day, without harming you physically or mentally, then couple of nights can make you feel tired all the time, to find it difficult to concentrate or to take decisions, making it very dangerous if you are driving or operating heavy machinery. On Monday a study released by the National Sleep Foundation revealed that many Americans face sleeping problems due to longer workdays and an increase of the time spent working at home (3- 4 hours/week). If you think they are also trying to find time to spend with families, you can imagine how much sleep they actually get. It is a serious matter, especially if you work in a domain that is risky like a nuclear plant like the security guard at the Peach Bottom plant in south-central Pennsylvania. Besides other problems generated by an improper sleep are high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, heart diseases, low levels of HDL cholesterol. The study performed by the NSF attracted the attention of the negative aspects and even the chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission promised to take more interest on the matter. Did you get enough sleep last night?

Chris Cantell Discusses Health: FDA is understaffed and lacking the technology to ensure American drugs are safe
by Corina Ciubotaru

Recent findings by the Government Accountability Office show the Food and Drug Administration is facing serious problems when it comes to inspecting foreign drug manufacturers. The situation in the U.S. is good, but apparently two-thirds of foreign drug manufacturers may have never been inspected, partly because of the institutions' outdated computers and databases, that provide contradictory information in regard to the location of the companies seeking FDA approval. American companies are inspected at least once every two years but regulations are scarce when it comes to foreign suppliers. Foreign companies produce as much as 80 percent of the drug ingredients and around 40 percent of all drugs imported in America and it would take the FDA 13 years to inspect all the companies it needs to at the current rate. It uses volunteers to conduct inspections abroad and gives companies a warning before they come, as opposed to the surprise inspections in the U.S., and the inspectors have to rely on English-speaking employees in the visited companies as they are not accompanied by a translator. One option for solving the problem would be to send specialists abroad to set up local counterparts that would be able to gather data much quicker. During a testimony in front of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, Carl Nielsen, former FDA director for import operations said the Congress issued a report ten years ago that showed the same problems, which apparently haven't been solved since. No need to worry though, drugs in America are still considered to be some of the safest in the world.

Science raves
by Claudia Sonea

If you ever wondered why you have headaches and dry eyes after flying, don't bother to blame the airplane's ventilation system, researchers will argue with you. Science comes again in help and explains how your oily body and ozone in the upper atmosphere interact inducing you the in-flight illness. American and Danish researchers made an experiment on two groups of 16 volunteers in a mockup of an airline, in simulated four-hour flights. They were exposed to varying levels of ozone and air flow like in the actual flights and discovered that the ozone in the cabins increased the production of identifiable chemical byproducts, especially those that create headaches, nasal irritation and other symptoms of "sick building" syndrome. According to study leader Charles Weschler, a chemist at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, the interaction of ozone with bodily oils such as squalene, oleic acid on volunteer's skin, hair and clothing produced more than half of the discovered chemicals. He also said that more studies are required and as a result measures can be taken in order to reduce their production in aircraft and buildings to a level that Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recommends. The worst type of airplane is the narrow one, because it is not properly equipped with the ozone-destroying catalysts that are common on wide-body planes and this way the ozone in the cabin can exceed greatly the average of 100 ppb recommended by the FAA during a four-hour flight that includes cruising at or above 27,000 feet. For further information just visit LiveScience.com and all your hunger of knowledge will be satisfied. Science like always raves.

Chinese toys will become subject to strict regulation
by Corina Ciubotaru

The scandal involving toys tainted with lead paint is taking bigger proportions every day. After Mattel recalled 21 million toys during one month because of considerable amounts of lead in the paint and little magnets that children could swallow, Toys "R" Us started doing its own inspections on its merchandise, using a special lab starting this week. It will do spot checks on the products to make sure the toys aren't a health risk to young children. Disney is also getting more involved, as the company risks losing its credibility. Even though only 3% of their income is from toy sales, Disney wants to make sure their branded toys are safe and enjoyable, so it will hire independent companies to check various toys. In the meantime, Chinese officials agreed to take the lead out of the toys manufactured in their country and enforce strict quality controls in companies, while requiring the U.S. importer an "export registration". Also, the agreement between the two countries requires more efficient communication between exporters and importers, and better prices from the importers to prevent Chinese companies from using low-quality materials in their toys. The United States are the biggest importer of Chinese toys, followed by the rest of Asia and Europe so this agreement comes as something that should have been done sooner. As China imports exceed even Canadian ones, maybe more agreements like this should be enforced for a variety of products, to make sure the health of Americans is in no way at risk.

Depression causes smoking
by Claudia Sonea

Recent studies revealed the fact that most of the pregnant women are smoking despite that they know it causes the risk of miscarriage, premature birth, and low birth weight, death from SIDS, and learning and behavior disorders. Dr. Jan Blalock of the University of Texas M.D Anderson Cancer Center says that is futile to appeal to old messages like quite for your baby and that is why he created the program Baby Steps; to find solutions to women's problems, because depression is the one causing the need to smoke and it must be treated. Dr. Renee Goodwin, a Columbia University epidemiologist, did a study on 1500 women and discovered that more than 22 percent smoked during pregnancy and about 12 percent were classified as nicotine-dependent. 30 percent had a mental health disorder and the vast majority suffered depression. In the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology she stated that the smokers who quit during pregnancy are about three times as likely to have a disorder. According to Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse the reason is that Nicotine and other chemicals in cigarette smoke can act like weak antidepressants. The smoking habit is more a disease than a choice and for those that want to get rid of the habit it gets worst due to the sadness, lethargy or other depression symptoms. Texas' Project Baby Steps tries to find out some therapy methods because the antidepressants are not yet safe and there is no certitude that will not affect the pregnancy. The purpose is to help the vulnerable group to solve some of the problems they have. Goodwin warns that it is no longer enough only to inform about the risk and that treatment programs should be created.

Gums will officially prevent teeth cavities
by Nina Gotzmannova

If you have ever believed the advertisement that chewing gum will help your teeth and decrease the risk of getting cavities, you were right. The American Dental Association approved Wrigley sugar-free gums Orbit, Extra and Eclipse are helping the teeth. Of course, several requirements must be fulfilled. It's not enough to chew gum once a day, or just for a while. To get strong teeth and anti-cavity protection man have to chew the gum three times a day and at least 20 minutes. The study, on which ADA based their approval, showed that chewing gum in this time will produce more saliva. Saliva helps to clean the teeth and let them cleaner, stronger and healthier. The seal on the product means it meets ADA requirements and has several benefits. It is already on several toothpaste or other products for dental hygiene. The director of ADA Clifford Whall said that this seal of acceptance is meant to inform customers about quality and efficiency of the product. The study was partially financed by Wrigley, because it was oriented on Wrigley chewing gum only. The company had invested more than $30.000 in the research and also donated 25.000 to support ADA health screening program. But for the ones, who hope the chewing gum can save their teeth, there is some 'bad' news. ADA still recommends brushing teeth twice a day, using interdental cleaner and, of course, regularly visiting the dentist. The gum itself is not strong enough to protect teeth as they need to be protected.

Soccer beats jogging for fitness
by Notme dfsfs

Researchers from Denmark presented a study last week at the 2007 British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences Annual Conference, in which they suggested that soccer works off more fat and builds up more muscle than jogging. The research was led by Peter Krustrup, an associate professor in exercise physiology at the University of Copenhagen and colleagues at the Copenhagen University Hospital and Bispebjerg Hospital. For the study they evaluated 37 sedentary males with age from 20 to 40, some of them had played soccer in the past. The subjects were split into groups of soccer players, joggers and couch potatoes. They were strapped with heart monitors and after 12 weeks, with one hour of matches or jogging for three times a week, the scientists found out that the body fat percentage in the soccer players dropped by 3.7 percent, compared to about 2 percent for the joggers. Also the muscle mass of soccer players increased with 4.5 pounds while joggers didn't have any significant changes. Of course the group of couch potatoes showed no changes in any of the measurements. The soccer group gained a significant reduction in so-called "bad" LDL cholesterol, while the jogging group's cholesterol was unchanged.Researchers said the soccer players considered the matches fun without presenting signs of tiredness, unlike the joggers that were exhausted."The soccer players were having more fun, so they were more focused on scoring goals and helping the team, rather than the feeling of strain and muscle pain," Krustrup said.

The Pot Shops
by Notme dfsfs

Morley Safer a correspondent for 60 Minutes investigated medical marijuana, the Californian law behind it and how people abuse the system just to get high.He spoke with Rev. Scott Imler, one that sustained the legalization of marijuana for cancer and AIDS sufferers whose pain and nausea are relieved by marijuana. He admitted that his noble idea created instead "pot dealers in storefronts" who sell to anyone with doctors' notes that are fairly easy to obtain."I think there's a lot of [people just buying the drug to get high]," he tells Safer. "A lot of what we have now is basically pot dealers in storefronts."The "60 Minutes" episode featured a former Modesto marijuana dispensary manager Luke Scarmazzo, that was arrested in September 2006 charged with other three men on being related with the McHenry Avenue dispensary. He pleaded not guilty. In San Mateo a few weeks ago the DEA raided three medical marijuana dispensaries that the county district attorney said violated state law."San Mateo County has always been at the forefront of attempting to meet the needs of its citizens, and we have a heart," said San Mateo County Supervisor Jerry Hill. "If someone is suffering, then we want to prevent that. And if someone is suffering from adisease, and medical marijuana is their only relief, we want to facilitate that within the law."

Fake acupuncture works too
by Nina Gotzmannova

Conventional therapy of treating low back pain loses a point. The alternative medicine wins. In a search for the best treatment for suffering patients even the fake acupuncture works better than the "normal" healing methods. These are the results of a German study of treating back pain.In the largest acupuncture research were 1.100 people involved. They were divided into three groups. The first group received a real acupuncture treatment, the second one fake acupuncture, where the needle wasn't as deep as it should be and the needles weren't in the traditional acupuncture points. The third group received conventional medical procedures such as painkillers, massage or physical therapy. After six months the patients were questioned about their health. The results of the research were amazing. Almost a half (47%) of the real acupuncture patients felt better. Slightly less (44%) of people who received fake acupuncture felt better too. And the improvement on their health in the third group noticed only 27%. The researchers from Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany, are still not sure, what caused this surprising result. It may be the expectations the patients had, the distrust in traditional medicine or placebo effect as well. It is still not clear how Eastern medicine including acupuncture works. The Chinese believe disease is a result of disharmony between yin and yang energy and by stimulating certain sensitive parts of the body by inserting needles inside or pressuring them the disease can be healed. The Western medicine has several explanations, but they are only theories. Finally this research led to a practical conclusion. German insurance companies would include acupuncture as a regular therapy to people affected by low back pain.

Francesco Cappuccio, professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Warwick's medical school, is the coordinator of the study based on the sleep patterns of participants aged 35-55 years during two periods of their life, 1985-88 and 1992-93 and then until 2004. The general sentence is that if you're not having enough sleep, you are twice more probably to die due to heart disease. The reasons are not yet well known, but mostly it's all linked to increased blood pressure, commonly known to raise the risk of heart attacks and stroke. 10000 government employees were studied for 17 years and the result was that those who cut their seven hours sleep to five hours or less had to deal a 1.7-fold increased risk in mortality from all causes and double the risk of cardiovascular death. Also busy modern lifestyle is a permanent danger and it is a real problem because more then a third of UK residents and 40 percent of US regularly sleep less than five hours a day. The percentage of other countries it is not yet known, but it is a high one mostly in the countries that are in full process of developing. The results took in count age, sex, smoking and alcohol consumption, body mass index, blood pressure and cholesterol. However, there are other risks if you get more than seven hours sleep, like cancer or fatigue. So the optimal is no more or less than 7 hours/night. The study was supported by British government and U.S. funding and it is the first one of this type. Don't forget and pay attention to the hours spent on sleeping, because it could seriously damages your health. Don't go away, more to come.

Self-discipline can protect the brain from Alzheimer's disease
by Nina Gotzmannova

The science and the health care are going forward with mile steps. Now the researchers from Chicago Rush University Medical Center discovered what can help against getting the Alzheimer's disease. It's nothing easier than conscientiousness or just self-discipline. The analysis was studying almost one thousand older religious persons for twelve years. In the beginning of the research no one was suffering from dementia or other signs of Alzheimer's disease. The priests, nuns and brothers have completed a survey about themselves and about their self-discipline habits. The conscientiousness scores were based on the answers. Their average age was 75 years. All the participants were yearly tested for cognitive decline and dementia. After the twelve years 176 of them developed Alzheimer's disease. The brains of those who died during the research were studied during an autopsy. But surprise came with the brains of people with high conscientiousness score. The researchers realized although their brains have some signs of Alzheimer's disease, the persons were not demented. Their dutifulness had helped them.According to the survey they had completed there is 89 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease for dutiful persons. However the scientists admit this group of people was little bit unusual. But combined with other risk factors they still had 54 percent less chance to become an Alzheimer's disease patient.Previous studies had proved that people who were doing stimulating activities like working puzzles have lowered their risk of getting the disease, while people who were stressed at work or worrying about their liver had the risk increased. Probably the mental stimulating activities can produce more neural connections and work like a protection against dementia.

The Mighty Milers program keeps kids up and running

by Corina Ciubotaru

Obesity is a growing concern all over the world and we are constantly being told what to eat, where the fattest people are and that being slim is the only way you can truly enjoy your life. Not many foundations or programs are doing anything though, expect for studies, and most of us are left wondering how we can lose weight and gain happiness, at least for our children if there is no hope left for us. The Mighty Milers program is trying to do just that: 20,000 kids have joined and are running three times a week in their schools, about 20 laps or the equivalent of a mile and they love every minute of it. Jogging is a great way to lose weight and get stronger bones, but for these kids it's also fun because they get to do it with their friends, compete and win prizes for their progress. They also lose weight and become more energetic and the creators of this program hope that jogging will become a lifetime hobby for them and that the next generation will be healthier and fitter. Obesity is a major health risk for people all over the world and it can lead to other diseases such as diabetes and heart problems. Unhealthy food eating habits and lack of physical exercise are what trigger obesity and it's better to educate kids so that they won't become overweight adults than assault them with diets later on, when they become teenagers and start to worry about their looks.

Brain hardening

by Barbie Kunkelova

"Oh, where did I leave my glasses, was it on this table? But in this room? What is this for a room? !Do I wear glasses? I surely made that curtain my daughter is ironing & but wait & that is a daughter? I'm not sure, I'm just not sure. Why would I have a daughter anyways? Have I been married? I won't cut myself, I won't!!!"The brain hardening, as people used to call the mysterious changes in behavior of older people, or the "Alzheimer's", is a neurodegenerative disease usually found in older people's brains & by people over 65 years old. It was first discovered on one beautiful day in year 1901 by Dr. Alois Alzheimer, who was a German psychiatrist. He found it in a 50-year-old woman's case. Her name was Auguste Deter. She was over 40 years old when first symptoms of dementia appeared in her behavior: loss of memory, delusions, temporary vegetative states (state very similar to coma), trouble with sleeping (she usually screamed at night and dragged her sheets around the house). When her husband Karl couldn't take it anymore, he brought her to a hospital in Frankfurt where she was examined and taken care of by Dr. Alzheimer. He asked her the same questions every few days to see if she remembered, but after few years she became completely mindless and died in April of 1906. In November Dr.Alzheimer decided to publicize this curious case. There is no cure; the available medications might only help patient's memory in some cases.

Chris Cantell Discusses Health: Flexible work is the best way to keep yourself healthy.
by Daniela Simkova

How would you like to work from your house? Don't you think it is possible to match your family and your work? Well, if not, you should revalue your views on this problem. Researchers form the Wake Forest University School of medicine think it is even necessary to change your work time to flexible. They say, that flexible work time can keep you healthy. You will have time for your family, for doing some sport, to make a healthier food instead of being in a rush to eat something, just anything. You can even save some of your precious time by working from your home, because you don't have to commute to work every morning. Instead of driving to work, you can drive your kids to school and that means more time spent with your sweethearts. Mr. Joseph G. Grzywacz, a professor of Wake Forest University School of Medicine says: "Perhaps it gives people the time to fit in healthier lifestyle into their everyday regimen or maybe it just enables people to better manage their time."Flexible way of work was designed for people, especially women, who want to combine their work with family. Interesting is that not only women, but also men are pleased by a flexible work. "This isn't just about high-level office workers, these people perform a wide variety of tasks within the company," said Mr. Grzywacz. Once you are happy and you don't have problems with your family, you are not stressed, which means more productive work in your occupation.

I'm at the end of my rope

by Kamila Moravcikova

Have you ever thought about a chance your child will suffer from autism? I bet almost everyone of us has seen "Rain man" movie. However, I don't think we can imagine what it really means parenting child with autism. For those who already are parents (and are parenting healthy kids) it can seem to be mission impossible. Can yo imagine how much patience and love these children need? The sad part is that sometimes they are able to receive your love, but most of the time they are not able to deliver their feelings as they are incapable of acting socially or even forming friendships. Furthermore, in many cases they are aggressive. Moreover, it's not only about being "unsociable", there are problems in every day life and every day routines. For example, you have to speak explicit, there is no place for idioms or phrases. You cannot say "I'm at the end of my rope" when this child see just you standing there without any rope. It seems like a foreign language to them. Hopefully, you don't have a rope anywhere around. Autistic kids can just find it and hurt themselves trying to get at the end of a rope. Literally. For all those who are parents of autistic child or are caring about them: Please, don't give up. There are some new genetic studies about the development of this disease explaining how it can be treated.

The worst danger for kids is in the kitchen

by Nina Gotzmannova

When the baby is born, everyone tells the new-parents, that the biggest risk for their child is in their kitchen. Clumsy and unconcerned baby can touch the cooking stove, spill hot soup, cut itself on a piece of glass or eat something small and begin to choke. But nobody ever told parents of a newborn that the biggest danger in the kitchen is hiding in the fridge and in the shelves. Yes, we are talking about the unhealthy fat and sweet food that kids like to eat at most.Regularly eating at fast foods, sitting in front of TV or behind the computer screen, soft drinks from vending machines, eating chips, French fries and lots of sweets - that all is a direct way to hospital. The number of kids hospitalized due to health problems caused by obesity has tripled, showed a new study released on Wednesday. In 1998 there were 40 out of every 10,000 children in hospital because he or she was too fat. In 2004 the number of hospitalized kids and teenagers was 120. Kids are coming into hospital, because they have high blood pressure, gall bladder stones and sleep apnea. These problems are mostly between adult obese people, not among kids. Because of their unhealthy lifestyle they suffer sooner than necessary. But the problem begins at home. Parents who often eat at fast food or restaurants are representing a bad example for kids. Instead they should try to cook at home some low fat and healthy meal, eat more fruit and vegetables and totally stop drinking soft drinks. One can of average Pepsi or Sprite has as many calories as two grapes, three oranges or as 100 grams of a roasted chicken breasts.

Tony Blair will reveal it all

by Nina Gotzmannova

To be the most powerful man in an important world country is no doubt unforgettable experience. Tony Blair, the former British Prime Minister thinks so, and that's probably why he decided to publish his own memoir. In age of 54 he wants to put all his thoughts about his time as a Member of Parliament and Prime Minister. Better now, when his memory is still good. The publisher of this bookshelf-jewel will be Random House, the world's biggest book publisher. The date of publication or the price of money Blair will receive has not been revealed yet.Tony Blair was born as Anthony Charles Lynton Blair on May 6 1953. His past was undoubtedly connected with rock music. Before he begins his study in the University of Oxford, he wanted to make his money as a rock music promoter. As a student, he played guitar and sang for a rock band. In a recent interview revealed another famous Briton, Ozzy Osbourne, that rock music is still a passion for Tony Blair. Osbourne said that Blair asked him how to play Iron Man, because he is playing that with mistakes. But readers of Blairs' memoir most probably won't find these informations in the new book. If he wants to reflect his years he spent as a leader of United Kingdom, he will concentrate on other stories. He may be writing about birth of his son Leo, who was the first child born to a serving Prime Minister in 150 years, or what he thinks about George Michael video, which has portrayed him as a dog. Anyways, memoir of someone who has led a country (no matter which one) is always interesting reading.

When the children are vulnerable
by Natalia Holvova

The most vulnerable human beings in the world are children. That is the reason we treat them differently, establish documents for special children rights and make the laws that make children lives easier. Children are very dependent and so they need someone bigger to protect them, they need adults to feel safe and wanted! When we become parents we get different quality of responsibility. We are not responsible only for ourselves anymore. There are other smaller persons we are responsible for; we need to guarantee their happiness and well-being.When our children are sick we get crazy and we would do anything to make them feel better and prevent them from any suffering and discomfort. When our children are sick we would bring stars from the sky if that would help them. We would give them our own health and bear the brunt of our increased. That is happening inside of the parents who have children suffering from liver disabilities or diseases. There is no way how to live without livers! If under any circumstances both of them stop working, people are not able to survive. This kind of health problems are very serious and traditional way of solving is liver transplantation. Problem is the list of people waiting for suitable donor is too long and specially for children whose immunity system is not strong enough to wait for ages. There is a method of partial transplantation that can help but it is still very risky and takes half time longer than traditional transplantation. Only few people undergo this unusual measure and the results seem to be very good so far. There is always question of responsibility though. Is it responsible to risk our child life by doing risky procedures or is it better not to do anything and pray for faster move forward in the list of expectant?

Chris Cantell Discusses Health: New study on teens
by Claudia Sonea

Another study on teens problems regarding weight has been performed by the University of Minnesota. More than 2500 teenagers revealed some new things and also reinforced previous discoveries in this field. The main problem is that both over-weight and too thin teens abuse laxatives and are provoking the vomiting. All this being caused by the way the society perceives the human body, therefore body attitudes plays a very big role. Dianne Neumark-Sztainer, lead author of the study, states that this type of measures, like purging or abusing laxatives, diet pills or diuretics are all short-term solutions because on a longer term it will lead to the gain of more pounds and eventually to over-weight people. 44 percent of the girls and 22 percent of the boys confessed to have taken such measures considered to be extreme measures. According to Neumark-Sztainer everything is due to the self-esteem and body dissatisfaction. Another conclusion of the study was that girl who are teased about their weight are more exposed to the eating disorder and to be over-weight in five years in comparison to other girls. A general advice was that grownups should focus more on building the children self esteem than the obesity risk. Dr. Joel Jahraus, medical director of the Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital Eating Disorders Institute in Minneapolis, says that parents should send a balance message rather than cramming their children's head with diets. Teens should be more interested in developing a personality than to reach the perfect size. However, because we live in an aesthetic society, where appearances count a lot, usually we forget what is more important, that beauty fades with time and the soul is all that we have. Parents and people must lose the attitude they have towards children with a higher risk of obesity. Pressure will only lead to a desire of losing weight fast and therefore to an actually gain of weight. The study recommends family meals, in a more comfortable and relaxing environment. Don't forget, whenever you tease someone about the way she/he looks you might be responsible of her/his doom. Keep it natural!

Medical discovery
by Claudia Sonea

Health is an important issue and there are many studies made to discover diseases' causes, cures, vaccines and treatments. Technology is a useful tool, helping in a better and more detailed research. On Sunday there was a study released that revealed an easier way of analyzing cancer by using a nano-scale tool that distinguishes soft cancerous cells from stiffer normal ones. Published in the British journal Nature Nanotechnology, the study is the work of a team of scientists who by the help of an atomic microscope showed for the first time that the surface of living cancer cells were more than 70 percent softer than their healthy counterparts, this being useful to measure difference in elasticity held true across lung, breast and pancreatic cancers, and could provide a powerful means of detecting malignant cells that might otherwise escape notice. At the University of California in Los Angeles, a team of researchers led by James Gimzewski made the research on body fluid from suspected cancer patients with an atomic microscope that is rather pressuring individual cells with a sharp probe attached to a mechanical arm than providing a magnified view. The result was that malignant cells were four times as soft as normal tissue across all three types of cancer examined and that they can be identified after its shape, according to Gimzewski, because a normal cell gone malignant suffers both a shape and skeleton change. In fact the softness offers the opportunity to spread easier through the body. By comparison to other types of test like analyzing surgically-removed tissue by placing stained, thinly-sliced sections on a glass slide and looking at them under a microscope for signs of the disease or using antibodies to pinpoint certain proteins is faster, but not as accurate, says MIT scientist Subra Suresh in a commentary. Furthermore, test need to be performed in order to see how the existence of other diseases might affect the tests results. Don't go away!.more to come!

Work your mind
by Claudia Sonea

Mens sana in corpore sano says a Latin proverb revealing that mind and body are connected and in order to have a healthy mind you must have a healthy body. Until now nothing new, it's a cliché used by many sports people. However, it has become a scientific matter after a study published in the journal Nature Medicine on Sunday. For the new study researchers have used a tool called microarray that examined the effect of exercise on gene activity in the brains of mice. The brain area targeted was the hippocampus, which has been implicated in mood regulation and in the brain's response to antidepressant medication. As a result the mice that worked out on a running wheel for a week showed altered activity in a total of 33 genes, the majority of which had never been identified before. The exercise increased the activity especially of a nerve growth factor known as VGF and when a synthetic version of it was introduced in the brains of mice, a "robust antidepressant effect" was produced to animals placed in stressful situations. Senior researcher Dr. Ronald S. Duman of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, stated to Reuters Health that the results can significantly improve the development of novel therapeutic agents and also reflect a direct effect of exercise on nerve cells in the hippocampus, or more general changes in the brain, like better blood flow or increased hormonal activity. All in all, exercise seems to increase the production of naturally occurring brain chemical with antidepressant effects and the new study offers new means to treat depression in people. Furthermore, due to the study VGF became a target for new antidepressants, according to Duman and his colleagues. Don't go away, medicine has more to reveal.

No more fat people in Britain
by Nina Gotzmannova

All the people around the globe knows, that fat people are in the United States and United Kingdom, their successful life allows them to eat at restaurants, pick unhealthy but tasty foods and eat more than they would do normally. On the other side the privilege to have much money is because they spent unbelievable amounts of time at work and don't even have time to eat. Only in fast-food. Another unhealthy habit and the population grows bigger and bigger. The government wants to change that. It is known that obese people have increased cholesterol and are in bigger risk of coronary heart disease. The Health Secretary Alan Johnson has asked the Food Standards Agency to look at the risk and maybe force the food industry to using less unhealthy and dangerous trans fat.The government isn't acting with any reason. The newest report about health of the population has showed that by the year 2050 may be obese more than half of men and almost half of women. The effect government is worried about is the financial effect. Obesity-related disease already cost the National Health Service about £1 billion and the government £ 2.6 billion. In 2050 the sum of the money spend on obese people may be £ 45.5 billion and this number scared the British government. If people will obey that they weight is only their private thing, the government will have a strong argument against it. They may ratify a law saying if people would not like to participate in the governmental health program, they will pay all the cost of their medical treatment caused by obesity by themselves. And that's not someone would like to do.

"Sweets for my sweet, sugar for my honey..."
by Ludmila Martinicka

Doesn't the sweet taste reminds you a Sunday morning? When you put honey on the sweet bread and drench it in the hot cocoa. The sweet taste, sweet smell and fairy tales on the TV. Or the winter time, when it snows behind the window and inside it is so nice warm, with a tea sweetened by honey in your hands.Sweetening life is not the only use of honey. Although, for me, it would be enough. There are many kinds and varieties of honey. Depends on the honey bees. Each bee product has unique taste, aroma and colour from the particular flower or tree.We can use it in the kitchen for cooking, some people says, it is more healthy than sugar. Also scientists concede, that there is something healing in the honey. It can work by coating and soothing an irritated throat. National Honey Board, which is industry-funded agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, financed a resource about it and according to research, honey works best. Moreover, health advisers warn before giving cough medicine to children under the age of 6. For them honey would be better solution. On the other hand, be careful about giving honey to babies under age 1, as it could cause rare but serious illness.Honey can be found also in cosmetics. It can set at rest skin irritation, heal small wounds and soften the skin. It is often used as an ingredient of the face masks, shower gels, creams...Don't forget about other uses and bee products. Candles made of bee wax are nice decoration, and honey candies could confirm the chilling atmosphere. Now you can start sing...sweets for my sweet...It is not the one of the new commercial songs, belongs to golden oldies. Golden as honey and old as medicine of your grandmas.

Gates will fight malaria
by Nina Gotzmannova

Bill and Melinda Gates, the world's wealthiest couple, has another thing to 'play' with. They decided to fight malaria and exterminate it from the Earth surface. The pair just decided to say stop to this disease and help all the people who suffer from it or who live in malaria affected region.Melinda Gates said that anything short of eradication would be a bad business decision. The prominent couple recently donates $ 860 million to malaria programs trough the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and another $ 650 million to support the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. This act showed their decision is absolute and with no exceptions.Melinda Gates also said that although the fight with malaria in 1950s and 1960s in United States and other developed countries was successful, it doesn't mean that the fight has ended. Other parts of the world still suffer from danger of infection of this deadly disease. Each year almost 650 million people catch malaria and one to three million dies. Unfortunately most of them are young children in Sub-Saharan Africa and mostly this is the reason, why the Gates couple wants to eradicate the disease. There are already developed some new, successful vaccines to use for kids. It is safe for infants and more effective in preventing new infections. Another way how to fight malaria is to develop medications and control the insects, which spread the disease.Bill Gates is the richest man of the world. He can obviously afford to spend more money to fight a lot of disease, not only malaria. Most possibly he would be able to save lot of African countries with providing food, drinks, medications, blankets and more. So why just fight one disease? Why not to try to save with his billions the world? There is a big chance he can do it!

Care for a flu shot?
by Claudia Sonea

If you want to get rid of that pesky flu that is threatening to ruin your winter joy and keep you in bed with a high fever and a red nose, you now have the chance to actually do it. Moreover, you can even plan a trip to Alaska, while you have your vaccine; there are the nursing waiting you right before you take off. Airports in cities like Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Newark, N.J., and San Francisco are installing health stations close to the gates, past the security checkpoints for travelers to have a flu shot just after taking off their shoes, emptying their pockets and passing through the security checkpoint. These airports already have a history in offering flu shots to airline passengers before they cleared security. However, passengers were usually too scared that they miss their plane if they stop to get vaccinated. Now, that they moved it after the security checkpoint and the fear that or being stuck in security and not making their plane is gone, travelers seem to love the idea, according to Maureen Zampella, director of nursing and general operations manager of a service that is offering flu shots at the Newark airport. Dr. Dominic Mack, chief medical officer of the service offering shots in Atlanta adds that the lack of time to go to a physician is another factor. Even if the vaccines will not have an effect right away, because it takes about two weeks for a shot to offer full protection, you can prepare yourself or when the peak flu season begins, typically after December. Because the flu shots had such an amazing success, airports will also introduce cholesterol tests and screening for high blood pressure. Dr. John Zautcke, medical director for the University of Illinois Medical Center at O'Hare confessed that business travelers love the initiative and the fact that O'Hare and Midway have vaccinated a total of about 9,500 people this year confirms his statement. Have you had your flu shot yet?
