Rate of strokes in China is increasing
by Sandra Stoklaskova

Nowadays, we are living in a hectic environment. Each day we are meeting with new technologic inventions, and our lifestyle is being changed. As a result of this also the conditions of our health is different as it used to be before.Chinese researchers found out that the number of strokes caused by brain blood clots increased each year in Beijing by approximately 9 percent. Specialists thought that this is a consequence of unhealthy lifestyle and trends on economic prosperity. On the other hand, according to Chinese researchers, the number of people dying of those strokes is falling thanks to improving health care. They thought that authorities should shoot on reducing risk by including diets."The challenges include better control of stroke risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and obesity," wrote Dong Zhao, lead author of the study and director of Department of Epidemiology at the Beijing Anzhen Hospital. He added that very important aspect is an increasing necessity of a prevention of recurrent strokes in survivors and also need of rehabilitation services for these people. But the reality looks differently. The amount of smokers almost did not change and number of people suffering from obesity and high cholesterol levels increased in the times of transforming China's economy. Also dangerous factors as total fat intake per person in a day, average blood cholesterol levels and number of diabetics rose in last years, in China. This explains increase in ischemic heart disease deaths. On the other side hemorrhagic strokes fell by 1.7 percent.Zhao said: "Increased access to healthcare and improved blood pressure control are the most likely explanations for the decrease in hemorrhagic strokes."

Chris Cantell Discusses Health: Good nurse gone bad
by Claudia Sonea

If you are sick and the doctor recommended a health resort in order to recover, you should reconsider it. There are many problems that may appear like getting intoxicated with hydrogen peroxide. It is not a joke, it happened to Russians visiting a health resort. On Thursday, Itar-Tass news agency made public the fact that 17 tourists in the Caucasus spa town of Yessentuki had to be treated in hospital after nurse mixed-up water with hydrogen peroxide and gave it to take with them the enemas (a procedure of introducing liquids into the rectum and colon via the anus). Enemas can be carried out for medical reasons (as a treatment for constipation) as a remedy for encopresis, as part of alternative health therapies, and also for erotic purposes, particularly as part of BDSM activities. In earlier times, they were often known as clysters, and were probably used more frequently than at present. The sanatorium's officials revealed that the mistake was due to the resemblance between the two substances; nevertheless, hydrogen peroxide, which can be used to bleach hair, is used only as a disinfectant and should not be ingested. The nurses have mistaken the substances, thus intoxicating the patients and instead of making them enjoy the benefits offered by a health resort, they made them even sicker and even intoxicated them. Nowadays, a simple trip to a health spa might is dangerous due to the medical staff that is constantly doubtful and committing errors. Take better care where will you go next time and what resort you'll chose. Enjoy!

New on HIV
by Claudia Sonea

The AIDS virus is studied for a very long time trying to find a cure to it and that in the context that the immune system hides it very well and today's drugs can't reach. After many failed attempts, now scientists finally have discovered how HIV builds one of those fortresses, thus in they're exploring whether a drug already used to fight a parasite in developing countries just might be the answer. Researchers at University of Rochester have long struggled unsuccessfully to attack what they call reservoirs of dormant HIV, blood cells called macrophages that HIV hijacks and turns into viral hideaways. By identifying the exact steps that HIV takes to do that some existing drugs, including a long-used treatment for leishmaniasis called miltefosine, can block the main step and lead to the self-destruction of these cells. Most of the drugs used today turned HIV into a chronic infection, without eliminating the virus they can't reach the two known pools of cells where the virus can lie dormant, ever ready to resurface (memory T cells form one such pool- ensures that some diseases had as a child won't repeat ever again). The second pool is formed of macrophages that roam the body looking for invaders like bacteria. Normally once these cells are contaminated they die, but the HIV keeps it alive longer. Therefore the new matter is to find the best way to simply kill those cells. According to the Rochester team report on Thursday in the journal Retrovirology. HIV produces a protein that turns on a particular cell-survival pathway and it ultimately activates an enzyme called Akt that in turn prevents cell suicide. Dr. Baek Kim, lead researcher revealed that after finding that the Akt pathway is a culprit in certain cancers he conducted some experiments and found out that Miltefosine and a cousin named perifosine both rapidly killed the macrophages, leaving HIV without hideout.NIH's Jeang, who thinks that it is necessary to study miltefosine in monkeys infected with SIV- the monkey version of the AIDS virus. Don't go away, more to come!

Indonesian People Don't Know What to Do
by Jana Passova

Indonesia, the country with the highest mortality in the world, is one of the most affected areas with the bird flu. It began in 2003 and still lasts. Since this time have died about 101 in this country. They are infected by chicken or other sources. Even bed hygienic conditions, do not help. Indonesians are always in a contact with their animals. Children play with them. Ill chickens are in a daily contact with chickens that are kept to be eaten and sold. Indonesian people do not have information what to do with dead animals. And this is not just an insolvable problem of the small villages. A lot of people heard about the bird flu but until they don't have any personal contact, they don't understand the danger. Very often they take it like something what simply exist. Like many other diseases. This complicated situation could solve vaccinating. The problem is only how to do it. Is unthinkable to vaccinate all chickens that live in Indonesia and if it was possible, how many of them could be vaccinate in one day? Who will do these activities? There are some effective vaccination programs that exist in China, which could help. The bird flu is well known in the whole world. Own experience have not only countries of third world. There were well known cases also in countries, where anybody wouldn't expect it. The virus of this malign illness has infected more than 350 people around the world. 224 people died but this number doesn't need to be final.

Every kid has to be vaccinated
by Barbora Misakova

The question of health is the basic one. I would be there is no one who like lying in the bed with fever and have terrible throat ache. There is no doubt that parents are doing their best just to have all their children healthy with no medial problems. I see it on my mother, that anytime I come to her and tell her I am not feeling good, she is doing what she can just to make me feeling better. Of course, sometimes only mother's care and effort is not enough and some kind of medicament is needed. One of the most effective type of medicament is vaccine what is booster of immunity to a certain disease. Children are for example vaccinated against flu and older humans could be vaccinated against smallpox and other serious diseases. Now the question about vaccine comes from the U.S. where a federal advisory panel advises to vaccinate all children, except infants younger than 6 months. This means that about 30 million more children should get their vaccine too what would represent one of the largest expansions in flu vaccination in the history of U.S. Statistics show that although children ages 5 to 18 get flu more often than other age groups, especially children ages 6 months to 5 years and adults 50 and older have weaker immune system and for them could a flu presents serious threat which could cause other serious illness or even death. Experts also believe that vaccinating these age group could cut down days of lost work, when parents have to stay at home with their ill children. Vaccinating children against the flu could also prevent spreading this illness from children to adults and the elderly. If you are one of those who hate injections there is other alternative & a nasal spray vaccine called FluMist which is approved for people ages 2 to 49. According to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices vaccination of children should start as soon as possible, and doctors should already order their vaccine for other vaccine season. Although vaccine market expects to be able to produce enough vaccines there is still possibility it won't be so. Problems could be also with small number of the doctors who will vaccine so many children.

Smoking not only stinks, but even kills
by Sandra Stoklaskova

Are you a smoker? If yes, think about it. If not, it is your benefit. Smoking is a process of inhaling nicotine, which is very addictive. Sometimes the smoking is not about fulfilling the necessity, but about psychological aspect, that you need it to be satisfied. Around 4,000 children from 12 to 17 every day begin with this habit. These numbers are horrible. And not only are these, but also the amount of money spent by smokers every year on cigarettes. The last report of World Health Organization says that use of tobacco killed 100 million people across the globe during the 20th century. More over it remarks, that if things will go on in this style, 1 billion people around the world will die due to this vice in the 21st century. It also appeals to the governments to do something with this and to interpose. They can not let people die and purchase from their addiction. According to the report, governments around the world collect more than $200 billion in tobacco taxes every year but spend less than one-fifth of 1 percent of that revenue on tobacco control."We hold in our hands the solution to the global epidemic that threatens the lives of 1 billion men, women and children during this century, "said Dr. Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General.The research showed, that more than 66 percent of smokers live in 10 countries, from which 30 percent in China and 10 percent in India. The most smokers are from low and middle income countries. The WHO claims the governments to accept six tobacco control policies, which include raising taxes and prices for tobacco; ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship; protecting people from second hand smoke; warning people about the tobacco's dangers; helping people who want to quit smoking; and monitoring tobacco use to understand and reverse the epidemic, said report.

Chris Cantell Discusses Health: Living to 100? No problem!
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Most of us consider elderly people who manage to reach 100 as exceptional or even half-miracles and assume that it is limited to people without chronic illnesses But Dr. William Hall of University of Rochester believes that older adults who develop age-related chronic illnesses, such as high blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes, can live to such an age too. In his study published in Archives of Internal medicine on Monday he wrote the key might be the doctors who would treat these patients without prejudices about their age. The researchers from Boston University contacted about 500 women and 200 men for the study. It was reported that almost two-thirds of them have avoided age-related diseases. The rest was not so fortunate developing them before reaching 85 years. In average, men were more able to take care of themselves meaning they could handle everyday-life activities like dressing or bathing better than women. It was suggested than men had to be in exceptionally good state to reach such a high age. "Women, on the other hand, may be better physically and socially adept at living with chronic and often disabling conditions," wrote Dr. Dellara Terry and her research colleagues. Another study which focused on men in their 70s revealed that they had better chance to live to their 90s when avoiding risk factors such as obesity, smoking, high blood pressure, idleness. 2,357 men were studied for 25 years. About 40 percent of them reached at least 90 and 24 percent of the survivors were troubled by none of the risk factors.

Airport Noise And The Blood Pressure!
by Milota Sidorova

Airport Noise And The Blood Pressure!Aircraft noise, the sound produced by aircraft on run-up, taxiing, take off and landing. After the road noise, it is the second largest cause of environmental noise. The noise is significant up to the 100 square kilometers ( 65 square miles ). It is generally known, that its persistent influences the effects the hearing loss in all the levels. Under long term noise pressure, the delicate hair cells in the cochlea, - the inner apparatus of human ear are irreversible damaged. The side effects of the aircraft noise was an issue of more than 4 year old research of environmental health department at the University of Glasgow. The results, continuously published in European Heart Journal showed the jumping blood pressure of more than 140 volunteers. Their pressure was measured every 15 minutes while they slept in their homes near London's Heathrow airport. Alarming results found that an increase in night time airplane noise of 10 decibels increased the risk of high blood pressure by 14 percent in both men and women. The rising blood pressure can cause temporary or persistent hypertension, one of the main risks for strokes, heart attacks, heart failure and arterial aneurysm, and is a leading cause of chronic renal failure. This fragile inner control system reacts very sensible on every change. Also moderate elevation of arterial blood pressure leads to shortened life. As a matter of fact, the statistics admit hypertension along with overwight among the most serious health problems of our century. Lowered comfort of living near the airport causing serious health problems of citizens rose up the wave of protests in U.S. in 60ties. The aircraft noise became a widespread topic that forced U.S. government decreed using of low-noise producing engines and tried to solve the problem from the beginning. One of the alternatives were floating airports, the airports situated far out to the sea. The major disadvantages that stopped the project were extremely high cost and time expenses for travelers to reach the sea.Until the solution will come out, the citizens living near the inner city airports will barely suffer.

Smoking jeopardy in India
by Lenka Filipova

Recent study in India has shown alarming results. More than a million deaths are expected a year by 2020 due to ongoing smoking. The most endangered age group is between 30 and 69, in which was found out that one in five of male deaths and one in twenty female deaths were brought by smoking. Further more, it was ascertained that more than 50 percent of deaths is among needy and uneducated people. The study was directed by Prabhat Jha, the member of the Center for Global Health Research. He told that most surprising was the fact that smokers start smoking later than in other countries and what is more, they smoke even in smaller quantities. However, they are running the same or probably more severe risks as in the west countries. The most significant problem seen is that paupers smoke so called "bidis", cheap and small cigarettes which contain one quarter of tobacco of commonly used cigarettes. They are really popular among meager Indian people as they cost only 2 rupees a packet of 10 "bidis" (approximately, 5 US cents or • 0.03) on one side. On the other side, the cheapest normal cigarettes in India cost 1 rupee a piece (that is 2 UC cents or •0.01).The government in India was "knocked down" when realizing the seriousness of the matter. Health minister Anbumani Ramadoss proclaimed that they were going to do their best to fight the smoking crisis. They are aware of the fact that this issue touches mainly illiterate. Consequently, he promised to launch an anti-smoking campaign with pictorial health warnings on packages.

According to the report, governments around the world collect more than $200 billion in tobacco taxes every year but spend less than one-fifth of 1 percent of that revenue on tobacco control. "We hold in our hands the solution to the global epidemic that threatens the lives of 1 billion men, women and children during this century, "said Dr. Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General. The research showed, that more than 66 percent of smokers live in 10 countries, from which 30 percent in China and 10 percent in India.

Rate of strokes in China is increasing
by Sandra Stoklaskova

Nowadays, we are living in a hectic environment. Each day we are meeting with new technologic inventions, and our lifestyle is being changed. As a result of this also the conditions of our health is different as it used to be before. Chinese researchers found out that the number of strokes caused by brain blood clots increased each year in Beijing by approximately 9 percent. Specialists thought that this is a consequence of unhealthy lifestyle and trends on economic prosperity. On the other hand, according to Chinese researchers, the number of people dying of those strokes is falling thanks to improving health care. They thought that authorities should shoot on reducing risk by including diets. "The challenges include better control of stroke risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and obesity," wrote Dong Zhao, lead author of the study and director of Department of Epidemiology at the Beijing Anzhen Hospital. On the other side hemorrhagic strokes fell by 1.7 percent. Zhao said: "Increased access to healthcare and improved blood pressure control are the most likely explanations for the decrease in hemorrhagic strokes."

Good nurse gone bad
by Claudia Sonea

Dr. Baek Kim, lead researcher revealed that after finding that the Akt pathway is a culprit in certain cancers he conducted some experiments and found out that Miltefosine and a cousin named perifosine both rapidly killed the macrophages, leaving HIV without hideout. NIH's Jeang, who thinks that it is necessary to study miltefosine in monkeys infected with SIV- the monkey version of the AIDS virus.
