Gums will officially prevent teeth cavities by Nina Gotzmannova
If you have ever believed the advertisement that chewing gum will help your teeth and decrease the risk of getting cavities, you were right. The American Dental Association approved Wrigley sugar-free gums Orbit, Extra and Eclipse are helping the teeth. Of course, several requirements must be fulfilled. It's not enough to chew gum once a day, or just for a while. To get strong teeth and anti-cavity protection man have to chew the gum three times a day and at least 20 minutes. The study, on which ADA based their approval, showed that chewing gum in this time will produce more saliva. Saliva helps to clean the teeth and let them cleaner, stronger and healthier. The seal on the product means it meets ADA requirements and has several benefits. It is already on several toothpaste or other products for dental hygiene. The director of ADA Clifford Whall said that this seal of acceptance is meant to inform customers about quality and efficiency of the product. The study was partially financed by Wrigley, because it was oriented on Wrigley chewing gum only. The company had invested more than $30.000 in the research and also donated 25.000 to support ADA health screening program. But for the ones, who hope the chewing gum can save their teeth, there is some âbad' news. ADA still recommends brushing teeth twice a day, using interdental cleaner and, of course, regularly visiting the dentist. The gum itself is not strong enough to protect teeth as they need to be protected.

Morley Safer a correspondent for 60 Minutes investigated medical marijuana, the Californian law behind it and how people abuse the system just to get high. He spoke with Rev. Scott Imler, one that sustained the legalization of marijuana for cancer and AIDS sufferers whose pain and nausea are relieved by marijuana. He admitted that his noble idea created instead "pot dealers in storefronts" who sell to anyone with doctors' notes that are fairly easy to obtain. "I think there's a lot of [people just buying the drug to get high]," he tells Safer. "A lot of what we have now is basically pot dealers in storefronts." The "60 Minutes" episode featured a former Modesto marijuana dispensary manager Luke Scarmazzo, that was arrested in September 2006 charged with other three men on being related with the McHenry Avenue dispensary. He pleaded not guilty. In San Mateo a few weeks ago the DEA raided three medical marijuana dispensaries that the county district attorney said violated state law. "San Mateo County has always been at the forefront of attempting to meet the needs of its citizens, and we have a heart," said San Mateo County Supervisor Jerry Hill. "If someone is suffering, then we want to prevent that. And if someone is suffering from adisease, and medical marijuana is their only relief, we want to facilitate that within the law."

Conventional therapy of treating low back pain loses a point. The alternative medicine wins. In a search for the best treatment for suffering patients even the fake acupuncture works better than the "normal" healing methods. These are the results of a German study of treating back pain. In the largest acupuncture research were 1.100 people involved. They were divided into three groups. The first group received a real acupuncture treatment, the second one fake acupuncture, where the needle wasn't as deep as it should be and the needles weren't in the traditional acupuncture points. The third group received conventional medical procedures such as painkillers, massage or physical therapy. After six months the patients were questioned about their health. The results of the research were amazing. Almost a half (47%) of the real acupuncture patients felt better. Slightly less (44%) of people who received fake acupuncture felt better too. And the improvement on their health in the third group noticed only 27%. The researchers from Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany, are still not sure, what caused this surprising result. It may be the expectations the patients had, the distrust in traditional medicine or placebo effect as well. It is still not clear how Eastern medicine including acupuncture works. The Chinese believe disease is a result of disharmony between yin and yang energy and by stimulating certain sensitive parts of the body by inserting needles inside or pressuring them the disease can be healed. The Western medicine has several explanations, but they are only theories. Finally this research led to a practical conclusion. German insurance companies would include acupuncture as a regular therapy to people affected by low back pain.

If you are the kind of person that suffers because at night can't have a good sleep or had to reduce the sleeping hours due to work issues, the recent study tied to sleeping and mortality brings you very bad news. Francesco Cappuccio, professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Warwick's medical school, is the coordinator of the study based on the sleep patterns of participants aged 35-55 years during two periods of their life, 1985-88 and 1992-93 and then until 2004. The general sentence is that if you're not having enough sleep, you are twice more probably to die due to heart disease. The reasons are not yet well known, but mostly it's all linked to increased blood pressure, commonly known to raise the risk of heart attacks and stroke. 10000 government employees were studied for 17 years and the result was that those who cut their seven hours sleep to five hours or less had to deal a 1.7-fold increased risk in mortality from all causes and double the risk of cardiovascular death. Also busy modern lifestyle is a permanent danger and it is a real problem because more then a third of UK residents and 40 percent of US regularly sleep less than five hours a day. The percentage of other countries it is not yet known, but it is a high one mostly in the countries that are in full process of developing. The results took in count age, sex, smoking and alcohol consumption, body mass index, blood pressure and cholesterol. However, there are other risks if you get more than seven hours sleep, like cancer or fatigue. So the optimal is no more or less than 7 hours/night. The study was supported by British government and U.S. funding and it is the first one of this type. Don't forget and pay attention to the hours spent on sleeping, because it could seriously damages your health. Don't go away, more to come.

Researchers from Denmark presented a study last week at the 2007 British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences Annual Conference, in which they suggested that soccer works off more fat and builds up more muscle than jogging. The research was led by Peter Krustrup, an associate professor in exercise physiology at the University of Copenhagen and colleagues at the Copenhagen University Hospital and Bispebjerg Hospital. For the study they evaluated 37 sedentary males with age from 20 to 40, some of them had played soccer in the past. The subjects were split into groups of soccer players, joggers and couch potatoes. They were strapped with heart monitors and after 12 weeks, with one hour of matches or jogging for three times a week, the scientists found out that the body fat percentage in the soccer players dropped by 3.7 percent, compared to about 2 percent for the joggers. Also the muscle mass of soccer players increased with 4.5 pounds while joggers didn't have any significant changes. Of course the group of couch potatoes showed no changes in any of the measurements. The soccer group gained a significant reduction in so-called "bad" LDL cholesterol, while the jogging group's cholesterol was unchanged. Researchers said the soccer players considered the matches fun without presenting signs of tiredness, unlike the joggers that were exhausted. "The soccer players were having more fun, so they were more focused on scoring goals and helping the team, rather than the feeling of strain and muscle pain," Krustrup said.

The world's oldest man turned 112 on September 18th by Corina Ciubotaru
Do you believe it when people say eating healthy food and leading an active lifestyle could actually make you live longer? It turns out it's true for many people in Japan, as the country nears its 30,000 mark when it comes to people over the age of 100. Their diet consisting mainly of rice and fish is said to be responsible for their exceptional health and long lifespan and it is also in this country that the world's oldest man lives. His name is Tomoji Tanabe and he has just turned 112 on Tuesday. He says he doesn't drink alcohol and doesn't smoke and has the habit of taking a walk daily around the neighborhood, to keep in shape. Mr. Tanabe also keeps his mind healthy by reading the newspaper every day and keeping a diary and he became the world's oldest man after his predecessor died at the age of 115. The world's oldest woman is Edna Parker, who lives in Indiana and is 114 years old. This ever-increasing elderly population is a problem around the world, due to young people's inability to support the elders while the small birthrate found in most countries isn't enough to ensure pensions for current workers. Japan's improvements in the health system have led to people living longer and it is estimated that by 2050, the number of Japanese over the age of 100 will reach 1 million. But there is no way of knowing how longer the pension system will be able to cope.

Recent studies revealed the fact that most of the pregnant women are smoking despite that they know it causes the risk of miscarriage, premature birth, and low birth weight, death from SIDS, and learning and behavior disorders. Dr. Jan Blalock of the University of Texas M.D Anderson Cancer Center says that is futile to appeal to old messages like quite for your baby and that is why he created the program Baby Steps; to find solutions to women's problems, because depression is the one causing the need to smoke and it must be treated. Dr. Renee Goodwin, a Columbia University epidemiologist, did a study on 1500 women and discovered that more than 22 percent smoked during pregnancy and about 12 percent were classified as nicotine-dependent. 30 percent had a mental health disorder and the vast majority suffered depression. In the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology she stated that the smokers who quit during pregnancy are about three times as likely to have a disorder. According to Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse the reason is that Nicotine and other chemicals in cigarette smoke can act like weak antidepressants. The smoking habit is more a disease than a choice and for those that want to get rid of the habit it gets worst due to the sadness, lethargy or other depression symptoms. Texas' Project Baby Steps tries to find out some therapy methods because the antidepressants are not yet safe and there is no certitude that will not affect the pregnancy. The purpose is to help the vulnerable group to solve some of the problems they have. Goodwin warns that it is no longer enough only to inform about the risk and that treatment programs should be created.

If you ever wondered why you have headaches and dry eyes after flying, don't bother to blame the airplane's ventilation system, researchers will argue with you. Science comes again in help and explains how your oily body and ozone in the upper atmosphere interact inducing you the in-flight illness. American and Danish researchers made an experiment on two groups of 16 volunteers in a mockup of an airline, in simulated four-hour flights. They were exposed to varying levels of ozone and air flow like in the actual flights and discovered that the ozone in the cabins increased the production of identifiable chemical byproducts, especially those that create headaches, nasal irritation and other symptoms of "sick building" syndrome. According to study leader Charles Weschler, a chemist at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, the interaction of ozone with bodily oils such as squalene, oleic acid on volunteer's skin, hair and clothing produced more than half of the discovered chemicals. He also said that more studies are required and as a result measures can be taken in order to reduce their production in aircraft and buildings to a level that Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recommends. The worst type of airplane is the narrow one, because it is not properly equipped with the ozone-destroying catalysts that are common on wide-body planes and this way the ozone in the cabin can exceed greatly the average of 100 ppb recommended by the FAA during a four-hour flight that includes cruising at or above 27,000 feet. Chinese toys will become subject to strict regulation by Corina Ciubotaru
The scandal involving toys tainted with lead paint is taking bigger proportions every day. After Mattel recalled 21 million toys during one month because of considerable amounts of lead in the paint and little magnets that children could swallow, Toys "R" Us started doing its own inspections on its merchandise, using a special lab starting this week. It will do spot checks on the products to make sure the toys aren't a health risk to young children. Disney is also getting more involved, as the company risks losing its credibility. Even though only 3% of their income is from toy sales, Disney wants to make sure their branded toys are safe and enjoyable, so it will hire independent companies to check various toys. In the meantime, Chinese officials agreed to take the lead out of the toys manufactured in their country and enforce strict quality controls in companies, while requiring the U.S. importer an "export registration". Also, the agreement between the two countries requires more efficient communication between exporters and importers, and better prices from the importers to prevent Chinese companies from using low-quality materials in their toys. The United States are the biggest importer of Chinese toys, followed by the rest of Asia and Europe so this agreement comes as something that should have been done sooner. As China imports exceed even Canadian ones, maybe more agreements like this should be enforced for a variety of products, to make sure the health of Americans is in no way at risk.
