First Lady trying to change the fast food nation
by Zuzana Zelenakova

On Tuesday meeting of the Grocery Manufacturers Association First Lady Michelle Obama addressed food giants directly and asked them to try to be more careful about the nutrition value of their products. The amount of obese children in the US is alarming and still growing. Michelle Obama talked to representatives of such brands as Coca-Cola, Del Monte or General Mills in her continuing efforts to raise awareness of this problem. "We need you not to just tweak around the edges but entirely rethink the products you are offering, the information that you provide about these products, and how you market those products to our children," she said. She urged the companies to put ! more effort into the marketing of healthier food and more importantly to make products which contain more nutrients and less useless unhealthy ingredients. "While decreasing fat is certainly a good thing, replacing it with sugar and salt isn't," she urged. "This needs to be a serious industrywide commitment to providing the healthier foods parents are looking for at prices they can afford." Earlier this year the First Lady also agreed to promote Healthy Food Financing Initiative, which aims at delivering fresh, healthy and nutritious food to all urban and rural communities that has been missed out so far, and all that in seven years. Michelle Obama´s campaign is focusing on children food culture, particularly school lunches and vending machines, which are one of the main sources of extra-sugar and extra-calories food children are eating. Former President Bill Clinton who was part of a similar campaign few years ago in cooperation with the American Heart Association sai! d he admires immensely First Lady´s efforts. "She'll get ! visibili ty for it that I can't get. She's a lot younger than I am. She'll relate better to a lot of the kids in the schools. They'll relate better to her. I think it's a really great thing for her to do this," he said.
