Tax for insurance? Unhappy Democrats.
by Silvia Szarkova

Senate Democrats on Thursday this week found many issues to complain about in the latest version of healt care bill. They think that the measurement would hit the middle-class Americans. According to them, the new tax provision raised from taxing the most expensive insurances, would hit coal miners in West Virginia throught middle class to firefighters in New York., and this is what is making the Democrats unhappy. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus brought up the long-delayed legislation that would basically transform the health care system in United States. Opposition raised up just a day after he brought up the topic. The new bill would require almost everyon! e to buy insurance, would make the insurance companies to cover people with pre-existing medical conditions and this way would save costs. Actually, this gave a fresh wind to Barack Obama´s top domestic priority of extending the health care system for more people and lowering the costs. Where to get money from this? Baucus wants to tax the high. valued insurance plans, so called Cadillac plans, that are worth 21,000 dollars for families and 8,000 dollars for individuals. According to Baucus, these Cadillac plans are enjoyed just by a small percentage of Americans, so this would affect just about 10 percent of plans and 8 percent of taxpayers. The panel will begin voting on this issue on Tuesday. But some other Democrats think this would ruin many middle-class pocketbooks and wold reach deep into them. Senator Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, Democrat on the Finance Commitee who met Obama on Wednesday said that the bill "could prevent workers in high-risk professio! ns from getting the health benefits that they need, particular! ly coal miners." For sure, we will hear about this topic more.
