Insurance Numbers from Wider Perspective.
by Milota Sidorova
The United States are fighting for the approval of new health care reform. As president Obama suggested before election, health care and insurance was a necessity for every American citizen. And here we come to numbers. Health insurance is expensive issue for millions of Americans. At least for many who live in states of Southwest, also called “right-to-work”. Geography points to extremes between North and Central states that amount at average 75 percent of insured. On the contrary, Texas, Nevada, New Mexico and Florida have only above 20 percent of insured. The reasons are conditioned by geography and socio-economical factors. First of all it’s the livin! g standard of inhabitants. Logically lower paid workers can’t afford insurance than the highest classes that reaches almost 90 percent of private insurance. States based on agriculture have less insured than heavy industrial states of Northeast etc… The second condition is the structure of inhabitants. According research, Hispanic minority is in the direct relation with lower numbers. Reasons are obvious – most of them get low paid jobs or they are illegal immigrants. The age also plays a role. The highest numbers are quoted in groups from 20-24 years, being too young to get a job or having a job without health insurance. The second uninsured group is elders from 60-64 years, being too rich for public insurance and too poor for private insurance or too young to get governmental support. The state policy is another key reason. There are differences among democrat and republican ridden governments and districts. While some may agree on insurance as a priori! ty, others may not. So it seems with Worcester district, Mass.! where o nly 3.4 percent of the population has no insurance. Massachusetts is the state with the highest percentage of covered, the second place belongs to Hawaii 93.3 percent, then follows Minnesota (91,3 percent) and Connecticut (90 percent).
