All eyes on Obama

Speculations regarding the health care program are already invading the media just days before Obama’s speech on Wednesday night at a Congress meeting. The White House spokesmen dodged a firm answer on the position that US president will adopt regarding the confrontation between a public plan and a government plan. Republicans are definitely against a public plan, while the House Democrats seem to be in favour of such a plan. Still, for the president’s supporters a public health plan is a must. US Congress will meet on Wednesday after the summer holiday and first on their agenda is the health legislation that stirred divergences not only between Republicans and Democrats, but also between private insurers and the government, between the voters whose opinions are biased by the lack of knowledge of what a public plan would actually mean. If indeed workers and their families were to receive the same benefits as older people n! ow get through Medicare, then voters are backing the plan. Still the plan involves an insurance exchange which means that small employers and people have to buy coverage on their own, just like they are doing it right now, but the difference resides in the fact that the government is setting the price which private insurers say it is impossible to compete with. A utopia would be for the government to actually pay the bills, because it would increase the same costs that have to be reduced. As it is, the bills’ area of coverage and the costs it involves are of main interest. No one really knows what will Obama’s speech reveal and the fact that until now the president displayed an ambiguous attitude it is not at all favourable. Moreover, the decision he takes regarding the health care plans, it could cost him the next elections as most of his supporters are frowning to the actions he undertook until now and the discrepancy between what he pro! mised during the elections and what he is currently doing.
