Chris Cantell Discusses Health: New arms
by Barbora Misakova

I am sitting behind my computer and writing these lines. My fingers are running from one key to another, writing word after word, creating sentences. There is nothing special about it unless you try to imagine, you wouldn’t be able to do it at all. Unless you have both hands, all ten finger on them, and unless all this difficult system of nerves and muscles is working. I am lucky. I have both my hands. And even though it sounds unrealistic – there are cases when a man lost his hands. Even the lost of one hand must be very traumatizing but losing both of them must be for that person his personal tragedy. You are not able to feed yourself, take some clothes on, make yourself a tea or coffee, open or close the doors, and I could continue, but I think it is not necessary. In few words – life of a person affected this way just must be more difficult than usual.
Researchers and surgeons around the world are still coming with something new. Successful separation of two Siamese twins, brain surgery, heart transplantations and so on. All their work is worthful and for the patients it is sometimes like a miracle which comes true. One of these miracles happened also to one German farmer Karl Merk. He lost his both hands just below the shoulder six years ago in a combine harvest accident. On July 25 – 26 incredible number (40) of surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and other support staff was working on very difficult and important transplantation – the world’s first double arm transplant! When 54-year-old Karl had heard about this possibility to have both hands again he didn’t believe it. But when he woke up after 15-hour operation, he just couldn’t believe it’s true! Even though this patient’s dream came true, there is still possibility that his body won’t accept the donor’s arms. But now the reality is that Karl Merk has his brand new hands and as he told reporters at the Munich University clinic “These are my arms, and I am not giving them away again!”
