Salmonella outbreak -new clue
by Livia Cseresova

The inspectors of the American government got a clue about the salmonella outbreak by finding the same bacteria stain on a Mexican-grown jalapeno pepper in Texas and told the consumers to avoid fresh jalapenos.

However, this doesn’t solve the mystery. It’s still unknown where the pepper became tainted. But as Dr. David Acheson, the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) food safety chief said, "this genetic match is a very important break in the case."

The government’s precaution against hot pepper is now strengthened to a full warning that no one should eat fresh jalapenos. The Texas plant has suspended sales of fresh jalapenos and recalled the ones shipped since the end of June.

According to FDA no other produce in the plant has recently tested positive for salmonella. But on Monday there were showed pictures of tomatoes, onions and tomatillos alongside jalapenos.

McAllen, Texas is very near the Mexican border and it’s in a region deemed a major hub for grown and also imported produce. So that’s why so the bad pepper imported from Mexico appeared there.

Acheson also said that he recognizes that "there is a need to narrow this as soon as possible," as parts of the country are entering prime hot pepper season.

The pepper industry urged FDA to quickly clear jalapenos grown in certain areas. John McClung, the president of Texas Produce Association said that this is "a very broad brush to tar the industry with."

And according to Caroline Smith DeWaal of the consumer advocacy Center for Science in the Public Interest the tainted pepper "is an important clue but the investigation is far from complete,". Also, Dr. Robert Tauxe of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention believes that the salmonella outbreak isn’t over yet.
