Memory – promising answer
by Barbora Misakova

Memory loss, difficulties to remember recently learned facts, confusion, anger, mood swings, language breakdown, after longer time also long-term memory loss can occur. Gradually all bodily functions, minor and major, are lost and lead to death. Did you recognize it? If you were thinking about Alzheimer's disease you were right. It is estimated this degenerative and terminal disease afflicted 26.6 million people worldwide in 2006! Imagine that number! Millions of people are suffering, and most of them even don't have to know about it! Maybe a person from your neighborhood has it too, but as the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease can be experienced differently, sometimes it is really hard to say, if a person have it or not. But the final number of Alzheimer's victims is scary anyway. That's why scientists and physicians are trying to find a key to this disease, try to understand how it works, what if affects the most and then develop a drug, which could change this terrific fact.

As the ambitions and efforts are big, a little success has to appear sooner or later. At a medical conference in Chicago lot of concerned people were witnesses of long expected approach: a drug which could halt the progression of Alzheimer's was developed. Except marvelous effect of this drug, it has also a poetic name: Remember. Remember is in the second of three stages of development, so it is not prepared for use so far. And even though it is still tested, the hope is already where it's needed – with all those people suffering by this malicious disease, directly or not. Remember was tested on a group of 321 patients. They were given doses of Remember or dummy capsules three times a day. All patients on placebo lost about 7 percent of their brain function over six months, after a year they had continued to decline. On the contrary, all patients using highest Remember doses were showing improvement. Their brain function didn't decline at all, neither 6 months after the using Remember, nor a year after. The results are more than positive. As Marcell Morrison-Bogorad, director of Alzheimer's research, said: “It's just fantastic.” Now we just must believe, that Remember drug will give us in the future more than just early promise we got today.
