New study on Alzheimer
by Romana Otockova

The beginning is hardly remarkable – light forgetting, problems with orientation and failing ability to judge the surrounding. This is just the beginning and the first state of the disease, when brain is starting to be getting down. In the second state person even doesn`t recognize his relatives, surrounding, has problems with sanitation and is not even available to eat by himself. This process of constant weakening of brain is called Alzheimer disease.

Alzheimer disease is the most common cause of dementia and there still haven´t been found a cure for it. Even in the 21st century is not yet understood the cause and progression of Alzheimer. Some researches indicates, that Alzheimer`s is associated with plaques and tangles in the brain. Despite of this, there still has not been found any certain treatment, which would stop or reverse the disease. We know some current treatments, that can slow the progression, but most of them are just like drop in the sea.

The new study from University of Kansas School of Medicine suggests, that getting a lot of exercise may help slow the brain shrinkage in people with early Alzheimer`s disease. But even those participants, who were more physically fit have less brain shrinkage, they still dind`t do significantly better on the tests for mental performance. Dr. Jeffrey Burns, one of the study`s authors, says, that the work is just starting point for exploring whether exercise and physical fitness can slow the progression of Alzheimer`s. Also he explains, that the study coudn`t prove an effect, because the patients were evaluated only once and for such a research is needed to repeat the study over time.

According to the judgement of WHO is Alzheimer`s going to be the world`s biggest medicine problem in the future. There are millions of handicapped people in Europe and numbers are still raising. In1996 there was opened a center for researching of Alzheimer`s in Frankfurt, which aim is to find out how to recognize the disease as soon as possible and find out how to cure it. World Alzheimer`s Day takes place anually on the 21st of September.
