War on Disease in Africa
by Barbora Kasparova

Countries of the African continent are among the most problematic of the world, when it comes to hunger, and wars, and particularly, diseases. There are many obstacles on the road to their solution. Some of the diseases in Africa, however, can and should be treated. People of "our world" have long forgotten about such problems as cholera, polio, tuberculosis, typhoid, and measles simply because they don't practically exist anymore owing to proper vaccination. One of such diseases, measles, has been successfully eliminated by 91 percent in Africa and 68 percent globally thanks to the partnership of various organizations called the Measles Initiative. More than 217 million (!) children have been vaccinated so far. The project has launched in 2001 and it is a cooperation project of American Red Cross, US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, United Nations Foundation, UNICEF, and the World Health Organization. The focus on this disease is obvious, since measles is a leading cause of vaccine-preventable death among children. The Measles Initiative has extended its list of diseases they're fighting. Along with measles vaccines and vitamin A they are offering the insecticide-treated nets, that are important means in fighting another disease, Malaria, that is a number one cause in child mortality in Africa. Hopefully, in another five years, we'll see similar results. (http://www.measlesinitiative.org/news.asp)
