Self-discipline can protect the brain from Alzheimer's disease
by Nina Gotzmannova

The science and the health care are going forward with mile steps. Now the researchers from Chicago Rush University Medical Center discovered what can help against getting the Alzheimer's disease. It's nothing easier than conscientiousness or just self-discipline. The analysis was studying almost one thousand older religious persons for twelve years. In the beginning of the research no one was suffering from dementia or other signs of Alzheimer's disease. The priests, nuns and brothers have completed a survey about themselves and about their self-discipline habits. The conscientiousness scores were based on the answers. Their average age was 75 years. All the participants were yearly tested for cognitive decline and dementia. After the twelve years 176 of them developed Alzheimer's disease. The brains of those who died during the research were studied during an autopsy. But surprise came with the brains of people with high conscientiousness score. The researchers realized although their brains have some signs of Alzheimer's disease, the persons were not demented. Their dutifulness had helped them.According to the survey they had completed there is 89 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease for dutiful persons. However the scientists admit this group of people was little bit unusual. But combined with other risk factors they still had 54 percent less chance to become an Alzheimer's disease patient.Previous studies had proved that people who were doing stimulating activities like working puzzles have lowered their risk of getting the disease, while people who were stressed at work or worrying about their liver had the risk increased. Probably the mental stimulating activities can produce more neural connections and work like a protection against dementia.
