Chris Cantell Discusses Health: Preventing the Dangerous Secondhand
by Barbora Kasparova

A study by The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia proves that secondhand smoking can be as dangerous as regular smoking. The team of doctors demonstrated that non-smokers exposed to smoking developed lung damage. This finding supports the ongoing debate, whether the state should and even has the right to ban smoking in public places. Let's look closely at the current trend in the world. It was no sooner than at the end of the 20th century when the first countries have taken steps to protect their citizens from tobacco smoke. In the USA, for instance, it is up to the states to choose whether they want a ban or no, and the first state to exercise this right was Arizona in 1973 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoking_ban#Smoking_bans_by_country).Ireland, surprisingly, took the most radical approach to the issue in Europe. In 2004 they became the first country in the world to announce a smoking ban in all enclosed public places, and the ban was further enlarged by adding other areas. Despite protests from smokers, many countries followed. United Kingdom only recently, in July 2007, joined the group banning public smoking. The changing attitude towards smoking is well obvious on the signs concerning smoking. Before it used to be "no smoking" signs that were placed and smoking was allowed everywhere else, on the other hand, in near future, smokers will have to look for "yes smoking" signs, just like one looks for a toilette signs.
