$200 from $650 million gave Rotary and Gates
by Eva Zelenakova
In 21st century states from the 3rd world like Congo, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Somalia are still fighting not only in armed conflicts but with dangerous infectious disease that can paralyze and sometimes kill. Poliomyelitis, often called polio or infantile paralysis, is an acute viral infectious disease spread from person to person, primarily via the fecal-oral route and fighting with polio is very hard. This fight needs time, money, energy of people who want to wipe polio from the germy surrounding with poor sanitation. Energy of many doctors and nurses who want to help the children keep their smiles on theirs gorgeous faces is visible on their work. And the question about the time will be answered if I will tell you that they are fighting nonstop nearly two decades to against polio. And the never ending worries about money which they need is paused now for a while because of Rotary International and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The foundations gave $200million and Dr. Margaret Chan, director- general of the World health Organization (WHO) in the statement said that this investment is precisely the catalyst we need as we intensify the push to finish polio. The donation to be paid over three years and will go to immunization campaigns, surveillance and public education. "This money can make quite a big difference" said Nicholas Grassly, of Imperial College, London, who advices WHO on polio issues. "We can build on the gains that have been made this year." he added. But still $200 million from $650 million isn't even half of the price which is needed until 2009. And eradicating polio will ultimately cost $1 billion more, said Dr. David Heyman, WHO's top polio official.
