We are getting super size
by Romana Schlesingerova

We are living in the world where the concept of a normal portion lost its value. The media together with the biggest food chains feed our brains and bodies with commercials on a daily basis. Twenty years ago, there have been only one size of French fries and one size of fountain drink in the majority of the fast food restaurants. Now, we have the small, medium, large and supersize. The extra large, 42oz. coke costs us only 99cents. Do we really need it? Currently, about 31%, or about 59 million people, are obese. Almost 65% are either obese or overweight, 10 to 30 pounds over a healthy weight, which increases their chances of developing diabetes, heart disease, some types of cancer and other health problems. About 16% of kids are obese and another 15% are in a serious risk to develop the obesity. Should we keep blaming the fast food restaurants and the greedy companies? The answer is a catch. It is only a business that behaves according to its profits, trying to fulfill expectation of customers. Would they still offer us half gallon of soda, if we would stop buying it? Probably not. When Mc Donald`s first announced their $1 Big and Tasty, no one had expected there will be lines in the store and the drive trough and impatient customers, buying 10 of them at once. Burger King Holdings Inc, the world's second largest hamburger chain, just recently reported about their plan to test the new $1 double cheeseburger. "The test explores whether this new item drives incremental sales traffic and creates a significant sales lift," Burger King said in the statement sent to Reuters. No, we should not blame the marketers; they are giving us the chance to decide what we want. It's a test, as Burger King said. Hopefully, we will pass it well.
