Water or sport drink?
by Romana Schlesingerova

Many athletes consider sport drinks as the only suitable for their nutrition before, during and after their sport performance. We have commercials full of products, possessing the best recommendations, available in every taste and flavor. The history of sport drink industry is still in diapers. Fifty years ago, the most successful sportsman created their drinks at home. Cyclists filled up their bottles with tea and honey, marathon runners believed their friends along the track, who had helped with coke free of carbon and skiers welcomed sweet waters during their regular stops. Any drink for completion of the body fluids, purchased or homemade, should be, above all, tasty, to stimulate the sportsmen to drink more. It has to compensate lost liquids, bring the energy to muscles and retain the normal level of sugar in blood. The very significant difference between pure water and sport drink is in the amount of sodium. Sport drinks are several times richer in sodium, but on the other side, they contain fewer electrolytes than regular food products. Your body needs that much sodium, only if you are digesting as much. That means, you don't need to worry about buying special sport drinks, if your exercise lasts less than 4 hours. The major boom in the sport drink and nutrition industry started in USA in 1965, when Dr. J. Robert Cade invited Gatorade. The new sensation has been discovered at the University of Florida and Cade and his team dedicated their work for helping a local football find the way of better regeneration during and after their games. Cade, who died this Tuesday at the age of 80, would probably never say, his drink will become a sudden sensation, available all over the world in more than 50 flavors. Finally, the choice should depend strictly on your body. You can decide for a special brand, or you can combine after you try out several products. It's up to you, what suits you best.
